Republican Kazakh Kures Tournament Honoring Kozhabergen Zhyrau Held in Petropavl

A republican Kazakh kures (traditional wrestling) tournament honoring Kozhabergen Zhyrau Tolybaiuly is currently underway in Petropavl. The competition features 320 young wrestlers born in 2010-2011 from 10 regions across the country, competing in 10 weight categories.
The two-day tournament offers winners the title of Candidate for Master of Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Now in its seventh year, the event aims to promote Kazakh kures in the region and includes national champions among the participants.
Kozhabergen Zhyrau was a renowned commander, chronicler, zhyrau (traditional singer), and poet, known for authoring the dastan “Elim-ai,” which became a folk song. Organizers note that this tournament is not just a sporting event but also a tribute to the spirit and work of the great zhyrau.
The competition concludes on March 15.
